This powerful movie often will bring me to tears where I feel a wonderful sadness inside my stomach and I get chocked up inside watching the story of the movie unfold! If you can watch the scene where Richard Gere- "Mayo" is going to win the all time best time score they have ever had on the obstacle course and instead of being an athletic big shot he stops and turns himself around and goes to help his female friend Seagers who is having a difficult time and might get kicked out of the Navy airplane jet fighter program if she isn't able to finish to obstacle course! You see the character Mayo change from a badly hurt inside very self centered guy to someone who cares about somebody else and loses some bravado and independance to show friendship and leadership! He goes with Seagers on the rest of the obstacle course at her speed coaching her on how to overcome the difficulities she was overwhelmed by! I'm chocked up and almost about to cry thinking about that scene with the eagle fly song "up where we belong" playing in my head! I think it is Taylor Hackford's best film he ever made! This movie has excellent acting from Lou Gosset junior as the tough as nails drill instructor sargent! Everyone does very great acting in this film! I saw at a library book sale an early script version of the film where it took place in a rural poor part of Arkansas and not up in the rural part outside of seattle coastal Washington state area! I heard that Richard Gere was hated by his female co star Debra Winger! I was told that she couldn't stand him! They have to do sex love scenes in the film to! Pretty funny, that's hollywood for you! I have watched this film many times, it helps me feel better about other people and humanity at large! It's about overcoming odds in areas where you are weak or very vulnerable and in areas where you have gifts and strengsths others do not have helping teach them and show them how you know what you are doing and teach them demonstrate to them by example! It is also a film about caring about other people no matter how badly you were hurt and damaged in your past, that you can learn to show love and be loved with out being a selfish self centered person! A very powerful, excellent moving film! I'd say one of the 50 all time best movies ever made! If you like HIGH NOON with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelley then you will also like An Officer And A Gentleman. It is a similar against all odds story of bravery and hope, but also has an excellent soundtrack of one single song whose music is repeated over and over but composed differently to fit the scene! In High Noon it is "Do Not forsake Me Oh My Darling" sung by Tex Ritter, and in An Officer And A Gentleman it is "Up Where We Belong"
I'm going to start this one off with one of my all time favorites AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN6/11/2011
