I don't get it how people that are naturally talented at art can go and have little to no interest in the art that was made before they were ever alive?! I find it infatuating to see great fantastic and creative works of art that were created before me and the contemporary modern art scene! Many artists whose talents and artwork they make that I look up to them are disinterested or oblivious to great works of art that you can find out about online, in books, on video art documentaries, online, or in an art history class. I find that very strange, I just can't relate to it! I mean if you loved singing and were a professional singer wouldn't you want to know the great recording or learn the songs of famous singers or various cultures and era's in musical history besides what is a current hit out today? Or if your a serious dancer with lots of talent you would want to learn about famous dancers or famous dance companies and learn about dances from around the world and the different era's ages of dances that were once popular!
I'm not saying someone who is ignorant of art history should quit making their art, I love the fact that some of these artists make such great work....the fact that they don't know anything about art history is not a deal breaker for me! I just wonder how if your a full time artist who is popular how could you not have a crush on the works made by your favorite painters and sculptors in art history? I think a love and knowledge of art history makes me more creative and imaginative and interested in art and being an artist. It doesn't stop your creativity or ideas and imagination straight in your tracks because you learned about and now know about a new painter whose work is really great! If anything it shows you how many different examples and levels you can have as an artist by seeing great and eclectic groups of art out there!
If any of you who read this want to learn more about art history or a type of art, a particular artist, or era of art let me know and I can answer your email and question privately or in a blog on this website, whichever you prefer! I am not an expert on Muslim art history or asian art history. I know a lot about it, but not enough to teach a class about those 2 subjects of art history. I am pretty much close to an expert on western art history. I can't tell you how much lead is in the pigment on a Rubens painting, I'm not a chemist, I'm an art history buff who knows my artists and artworks inside and out! So ask away!
